China Customs Seized Quarantine Pests in 69,500 Batches in 2020

In 2020, China Customs seized 384 kinds of quarantine pests from imported goods in 69,500 batches that were an increase of 15% year-on-year.

Last year, under GACC command against external animal/plant epidemic and exotic species, all customs districts seized a total of 384 kinds of quarantine pests in 69,500 batches and 1,258 kinds of exotic species in 4,270 batches of imports from 102 countries/regions, returning or destroying 579 batches of agricultural products, so as to ensure domestic agroecological security.    

Besides, China Customs intensified external source control against external epidemic and species, including preliminary quarantine of 418,900 inbound animals at abroad, sifting out 99,300 unqualified ones (up 27.01% year-on-year); issue of bans on African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, HPAI and Newcastle disease against 29 countries/regions; closer control and prevention of major animal epidemics at ports; strict precautions against major plant epidemics such as desert locust. According to statistics, since last year, the GACC has issued 44 relevant warnings and 893 incompliance notices involving 35 countries/regions.

At present, the GACC has included port precautions against exotic species into its 14th Five-Year plan to effectively prevent the invasion.
